hOW TO tAKE CARE OF YOUR CARVING

Thank you so much for your purchase! Here are some tips to keep your carving looking great for as long as possible!

Firstly, many people have never owned a wood carving before and may not have realized that they do “check” (or crack) at least a little. It happens when the log is cut into, and the drying process continues. The trick to minimizing checking as much as possible is helping it not lose moisture too quickly. The way to do that is to keep it in a cool, not super dry place for the first year if possible. Bringing it inside, especially if the house is really warm and dry, will cause it to lose moisture too quickly resulting in deeper checking. Your carving’s favorite spot is a mostly shady area, for example, on a covered porch or deck, or under a shady tree.

Secondly, to prevent the bottom of the log from rotting, make sure it is sitting on top of a hard surface such as a garden paver or ceramic tile so that it’s never sitting in water or dirt.

Thirdly, the way to keep the finish from fading is again keeping it out of direct sunlight, but also, once a year lightly brush any dust off your carving and spray a couple coats of a spar urethane on it. We like the Helmsman brand of spar urethane spray, and you can find it at your local hardware store.

All these tips will help you keep your carving looking great for years to come! Let us know if you have any more questions and thank you again for your business. We appreciate you!!
